Got Itchy or Dry Skin?
Rodd Stockwell, MD
Many skin rashes are dry and itchy. Some people have itchy dry skin without a rash. Dry skin is the number one cause of itchy skin.
Dry skin is often a sign of a fat deficiency. Fats that we ingest are primarily used by the body to replace structural elements of the nerves, digestion, respiratory system, and skin. In this day of low fat eating, it can be easy to allow the fat intake to drop below the body’s basic maintenance needs. When this occurs the body must prioritize from the above list where to cut corners.
The solution is to give the body the fats it needs in abundance, while avoiding the fats, like trans fats, that interfere with normal body function. Take in these fats and oils by mouth as well as rub them into the skin.
In the skin the opposite of dry is not wet but oily. Water and soap (and alcohol) take oils out of the skin. Many ancient cultures like the Egyptian and Greek knew the value of the oils in the skin and rubbed oils into the skin for health and youthful vitality. If you have gotten away from these traditions--bring oil back.
Rub olive oil, coconut oil, or any massage oil into that patch of itchy skin.--and feel the relief.
