Surprise Immune Booster
Rodd Stockwell, MD
If you want your immune system to be stronger for this year's flu season you might try some herbal echinacea or some extra vitamin C or D. And, there is another way.
Our own stress hormones, cortisol and adrenalin, both inhibit immune function. This is fine when there is a bear or tiger to run away from, but most of us have chronic emotional stress. This type of stress, present all day, does not allow the immune system to do its job--susceptibility to illness often results.
The solution is called the Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, MD. Sit quietly for 5-10 minutes and breathe slowly and deeply with your belly as well as your chest. This type of deep breathing turns down the stress hormones and turns on the immune system. You will feel more at ease immediately and you will be more resistant to illness.
