H1N1 Flu, Vaccination, and Fear
Rodd Stockwell, MD
Everyone seems quite worried about the H1N1 flu this year. This is understandable given the type of media exposure this virus has been given, and yet everytime I check the CDC website I read "Most people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment." How bad a pandemic can this be?
There are numerous voices on the web, particularly Tom Jefferson, MD, who place this virus and vaccine in a larger context. My main concern is the fear generated by this media coverage. I know well the detrimental effects on the human immune system caused by stress hormones in the body. Watching the news can be hazardous to your health!
To read my article on vaccine advice in general click here. However, my advice for the H1N1 "Swine" flu is the same as it was 6 months ago: Turn off the television--avoiding exposure to the fear is probably more important than avoiding the flu.
