Change and Cure
Rodd Stockwell, MD
I know a man who has not smoked in 8 years but still craves the next cigarette. He now breathes with ease and has recently taken up running. But everyday he summons great willpower to avoid cigarettes; it is an ongoing challenge for him.
I facilitate another kind of change... A change not in actions, but in one's state of being. When we change who we are then the change is permanent and complete. When a smoker becomes "a non-smoker" he just doesn't have another cigarette--smoking would be inconsistent with who he is. This kind of transformation constitutes a cure.
We can change our actions. This goes a long way toward improving our health. But changes in action, in behaviors, require willpower. They can be hard to sustain. When we change who we are then the change is permanent and complete. There is no effort anymore.
Anyone can change who they are--children do it all the time. Some adults need to be reminded how, that's all.
