Habits are Easy to Break
Rodd Stockwell, MD
We all have habits. Some serve us; some don't.
When you find yourself with a habit that you don't like--take notice! That is the first step. Once you have identified a habit that doesn't serve you, write down what comes before it and what comes after it. Write down the complete sequence of events. Make it as clear as possible--be objective. It is important to see the positive and negative outcomes from the habit.
Once the pattern is clear in your mind, ask yourself what does this say about me? What kind of person would I need to be to have this habit?
Behaviors arise out of who we are coupled with the circumstances we are in. Often we change our circumstances only to find ourselves repeating the habit. The way to heal a habit once and for all is to heal how you identify yourself. A smoker can abstain from smoking but still crave cigarettes. But once he or she becomes a nonsmoker then the craving goes away, easily.
Change who you are and the habit will no longer be there.
I have helped many people change habits, in particular those related to diet, eating, and eating disorders.
